Animal Assisted Therapy

What is it?
Supporting the wellbeing of vulnerable individuals whilst  sharing the benefits and assistance of a specially trained therapy dog.

Ziggy.

Ziggy is a Labrador Retriever from working line, and has been developing his confidence in everyday life plus additional skills required to support me as a practitioner in delivering animal assisted therapy.
Ziggy is currently attending 'RememberMe' in Hooton where he welcomes everyone as they join the staff for lunch and watches them doing their exercises and activities.

Dog in PAWS uniform

Ziggy has learned to sit still when people are moving around him and can chill on his settle mat when asked. He knows lots of cool tricks as well.
He wears a bandana when he is working which helps people to realise that they can't approach without asking me first, and it helps him to realise when he is working.

🐾 What Is Animal Assisted Therapy?

Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) is a structured, goal-oriented intervention where trained animals—often dogs—play a supportive role in physical, emotional, or psychological treatment plans.

Dogs bring something uniquely comforting and engaging to therapeutic settings. They can:

  • Help children with additional needs regulate emotions

  • Support elderly individuals in cognitive and social activities

  • Assist people managing mental health challenges and emotional wellbeing

Therapy dogs are specially trained to work alongside professionals, enhancing therapeutic outcomes through their calming presence, responsiveness, and ability to build trust and connection.

In short: AAT uses the natural bond between humans and animals to promote healing, growth, and wellbeing.

Animal Assisted Therapy
The Benefits of A Dogs Presence.

A treatment plan supports each individual client which is delivered through activities which may for example, support the development of communication skills or emotional regulation of an individual.
A therapy dog adds non judgemental and unconditional affection to the mix. Stroking the dog adds 'happy hormones' to the mix giving that extra boost of dopamine and oxytocin which help to lift our mood.
