Fundamentals of dog Training.
Understanding
Positive Reinforcement.
At Pups and Pooches Dog Training, we believe in the power of understanding and communication between dog and owner. Our mission is to bridge the gap between human and canine interactions, fostering an environment where both learn and grow together.
We start by introducing dog owners to the fundamentals of canine psychology and an understanding of how dogs learn.
Practical experience of handling your dog, playing training games and applying reinforcement schedules helps to develop a knowledgeable, skilled and compassionate dog owner. Understanding your dog's mental state and emotional responses is the cornerstone to building a positive relationship.
Our training events are designed to be engaging and practical, providing real-life applications that can be used in everyday scenarios.
Aiming to develop confident teams of handler and dogs capable of living, working and competing together cooperatively.

Socialisation & Habituation.
What are they?
Habituation and Socialisation: Building a Calm, Confident Dog
Habituation is the process of helping your puppy or dog become comfortable with everyday sights and sounds. It starts at the breeder’s home with exposure to household noises like vacuum cleaners and washing machines, and continues as your puppy adjusts to their new environment.
Remember, everything is new and potentially overwhelming for your puppy—patience and reassurance are key.
As your puppy begins to explore the outside world, it’s important to introduce new experiences gradually. Let them observe from a distance where they feel safe and calm. Socialisation isn’t a race—research shows dogs can be socialised well beyond the early “socialisation window.”
The goal is to help your dog feel at ease around people, dogs, and new environments. This starts with calm exposure at a distance, slowly moving closer as your dog remains relaxed and focused on you.
If your dog struggles with calm behaviour around others, our Socialisation Walks are a great way to help. These walks are designed to:
-
Avoid stressful face-to-face greetings
-
Encourage calm, side-by-side walking
-
Introduce dogs to new environments in a safe, structured way
They’re perfect for building confidence and promoting positive interactions.
